Diversity initiatives are policies and practices that aim to improve target group members' workplace experiences and outcomes. While this may appear to be a simple task, research indicates that these campaigns do not always perform as planned. According to research, a number of diversity initiatives, such as grading managers based on diversity and inclusion indicators and forming diversity networking and affinity groups, can result in either greater or less representation of target groups. Organizations are complex places made up of people who interact with one another in complex ways. Even when leaders have the best of intentions while implementing diversity efforts, unforeseen outcomes might occur. First is backfiring, When a diversity project has an unfavourable impact on the desired objective, such as when the program reduces representation or encourages discrimination, this is known as backfire. Second is Negative spillover, this happens when diversity programs have an unfortunate effect. Diversity initiatives, for example, may elicit unfavourable reactions from members of the non-target group. Third is false progress, This happens when a diversity effort has the intended result on the preferred result diversity numbers improve, making it appear that things are getting better but the improvement is not followed by actual core change. Moving further, for making diversity initiatives more effective there are three board types which are, diversity is good, diversity is bad, and diversity is good but really hard. Writer new project was based on this board types and she surveyed about 500 employees and ask them how they thinks leaders are talk about diversity. Most common category was "Diversity is Good" but on the other hand, "diversity is bad" was very rare.

  1. I agree that creating diversity initiatives is harder than people think as there are always different scenarios. It is easy to gather data but coming up with a plan to increase diversity can be harder than it seems and I think that this is because of personal bias and stereotypes. I think that in the near future, as businesses focus on creating a diverse workplace, there will be multiple steps that will make it easier for leaders to be inclusive.
