9. Lets stop talking about diversity and start working towards equity

This video is posted by TEDx Talks 2 years ago on September 12, 2019, and the speaker in the video named is Paloma Medina. This TED talk was organized in Portland, in April 27,2019 and the topic was about diversity, "Let's stop talking about diversity and start working towards equity." In the video, speaker Paloma Medina's intelligent and hilarious talk challenges our understanding of diversity in the workplace and society. We need to challenge the concept of diversity vs. equity by doing a "search and replace" in our terminology.

The speaker says we should stop saying about work "Diversity" because this word is misguiding us and our brains do not care about it. She said, "99.9% of us have unconscious biases at some levels because of our Limbic brain" It happens from the old days when we live in the caves and we react differently when we say people who look different from others. We say that we need a diverse workplace but inside of our Limbic brain, we do not want it. However, on the other side, there is equity, for which thing our brains really care and it means that being fair towards others, and providing equality to all even though they are looking different. But the sad thing is no one from our community or business has been reached the point of equality. Further, the speaker shows a pie chart about a company where the number of employees was 4% from that community but in the area, there was 30% of that color people were living. So the matter was equity, not diversity and she said the basic point of diversity is "equity." The last speaker says we should not say that we valued diversity in the employees and instead of that we influence our leaders to commit us increasing race and gender on the executive team by 50% in 3 years.

1. All employees should take a stand in front of their leaders or senior managers to improve the equity as it can help a lot to normalize diversity. Diversity and equity are related to each other at some point but according to the speaker, our minds are not allowing for diversity but it cares for equity.

2. In the video the speaker shows a video, where 2 monkeys get 2 different tricks doing the same tricks. For one it was grape which was good and for the other monkey it was just cucumber and that monkey did not like his treat. the conclusion was our minds are so sharp even we are getting a thing as another person still we can catch a little sparkle treated differently. A long time ago, a teacher from our pre-school give different marks in exams to two students and both perform equally in-class tests. Then, the girl takes a stand for herself and asks the teacher and show her performance and shows that she deserves more than she gets in the exam.
